Home Secrets of Pallara's Marsupials (aka the Nest Box Project)
During Semester 1 2017, we investigated and setup a new
Possum and Glider nest box project using high definition IP cameras to monitor
the native wildlife and learn their behaviour. This project was active for a
number of years at the old Pallara State School site and we are thrilled to be
able to bring it to life at our new campus.
During April and May 2017 Mr Johnstone, Mr Clark and Mr
Riccobon, with Mr Bates to supervise the safety of our team, played monkeys and
set up the boxes and technical equipment to monitor the wildlife. With the
assistance from our District Office support team we have been able to live
stream the video to a large monitor stationed in our school Resource Centre.
On the 26/07/17 we welcomed our first resident Possum in one
of the erected boxes high in the trees in our environmental area.
The staff and students from the Pallara State School are now
able to enjoy watching the animals life and recorded footage on a daily basis.
This project will now be able to find its way into curriculum activities in
Science, Humanities and other areas. It is a privilege to be able to observe
this wildlife up close and on extended basis.
It is a worthy aim to develop in our students and broader
community, care and understanding of the natural environment and its
inhabitants.
