Parking, Traffic, Pedestrian, Safety around Pallara State School Protocols

Child safety is paramount, and illegal parking within school zones remains a significant concern for parents, local residents, and the school.

Limited parking spaces around peak drop-off and pick-up times often leads to competitive and potentially dangerous parking behaviours.

DESIGNATED CROSSINGS WADEVILLE ST & RITCHIE ROAD

PLEASE ensure you are using the designated crossings on both Wadeville and Ritchie roads. This is a great way to set a positive example to show students the correct way to cross busy roads safely.

As role models your actions significantly influence their understanding of road safety.

It is essential to instil in children the importance of making safe choices as they may have to cross the roads themselves one day, and by using the crossings regularly will give them confidence to know they can get across the road safely.

Despite the risks, numerous parents and caregivers are still jeopardising their safety and that of their children's lives, by crossing in between moving traffic on these two roads.

PARENT CAR PARK AREA CONCERNS

We are increasingly concerned about the unsafe behaviour taking place in the parent car park. Speeding, double parking, and allowing children to walk unsupervised through traffic put lives at risk every day.

As parents and caregivers, you are role models. Unsafe actions—such as crossing between moving cars or ignoring designated walkways—not only endanger your own safety but also set a dangerous example for your children and others.

Please help us keep all students safe by:

  • Driving slowly and attentively at all times
  • Using designated drop-off and pick-up zones
  • Escorting your children to and from your vehicle safely
  • Avoiding distractions like mobile phones while behind the wheel

Please do not encourage your children to enter cars that not are not parked in a designated car park. This holds up other cars from moving through the car park and endangers children moving through or around moving cars.

While we understand the challenges parents face in navigating school zone drop-off and pick-up, it is crucial to prioritise safety.

PARKING IN LOCAL STREETS

Please adhere to the road rules in the car park and surrounding streets along with the signage as Brisbane City Council will have compliance officers patrolling our school and surrounding streets to encourage safer parking.

Unfortunately, Brisbane City Council has received an increase in the number of reports of illegal parking around our school. As a result, our school has been added o Council's Safer Schools Program this term

These patrols will be conducted on foot and in highly visible Community Safety and Regulation vehicles that can identify alleged offences using Automatic Number Plate Recognition and GPS software. Please be kind – they have a job to do.

STREET PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOL

Please be aware parking on the yellow lines in Wadeville Street is not advised as a yellow painted continuous line at the edge of the roads means that you are not permitted to park there.

Motorists who park at these locations may in fact be endangering themselves and other road users by this seemingly simple oversight.

The law is clear. A driver must not stop at the side of a road marked with a continuous yellow edge line. An edge line means, a line marked along the road at or near the far left or the far-right hand side of the road. There does not need to be a sign accompanying the yellow line. The fact that there is a yellow line there creates the offence.
