Q: What are the minimum or recommended specifications for a laptop for my child?

A: You can find the specifications here on the Laptop Selection page

Tip: If your child is transferring to high school within a year or two, it may be advisable to select a slightly higher spec laptop with an i3 or i5 CPU. This will then ensure it will work with the software that high schools utilise.

Q: Where is the best place to purchase a suitable laptops?

A: We have vendors that have setup ordering portals for our parents on the Laptop Selection page on this website. Devices on these portals meet the minimum specifications required. Devices sold through Learning with Technologies and the Infinity laptop are all education grade laptops meaning they are easier to repair and are typically of a better build quality. Devices ordered though Learning With Technologies come standard with a 3 year on-site warranty (Meaning the school can organise warranty repairs on your behalf and have them repaired on-site) and optional ADP (Accidental Damage Protection) Along with great discounts on protective cases and accessories.

Most computer resellers will also be able to assist when you visit their store or online, as long as it meets the minimum specifications.

Q:  Are we required to purchase Microsoft Office 365 for our child?

A: No. All Qld students are entitled to a free student version of Microsoft Office and can install this on up to 5 devices. A lot of devices come with Microsoft Office pre-installed and just require activation to be used. Once the setup of the laptop is complete and connected to the school network all Office applications will be activated against your child's account automatically.

If office is not installed, simply go to https://www.portal.office.com/ and sign in with your students EQ logon to download/install the software. Follow the prompts as you go.

Alternatively, you can contact our IT Department at: helpdesk@pallarass.eq.edu.au and they will be able to assist or install it onsite.

Q: Can I get onsite support from the Helpdesk for my child's BYOx laptop?

A: Yes, You can visit the resource centre to get personal assistance from Mr Lickerman or Mr Duncan at these times:

Morning session: 8.00am to 8.30am

Morning tea: 10.30am to 11.00am

Lunch: 1.00pm to 1.30pm.

Q: Which Antivirus software should we be using?

A: Windows 10/11 has AV software included and there is no need to purchase any further software. Our networks firewall is very good and protects all devices behind it.

Q: How do I protect or monitor where and what my child does on the internet/computer?

A: Here are some applications that we found great. We have excluded Norton & Trendmicor for only one reason; any underpowered computer will become even more affected by this demanding software. Both are good products but a high powered i5 CPU or higher recommended for those two.

  • Microsoft Family Safety  is a free option with many monitoring tools such as screen time control and online content filtering.

  • Net Nanny ® $11/year for one computer.

  • Eset ® - $50/year for 1, or $10 extra for each additional device.

  • Qustodio ® -  $55/year up to 5 devices.

  • Bark ® - The most expensive but it covers a lot. $9/month or $99/year
